ANDREAS MEICHSNER

THE BEAUTY OF SERIOUS WORK

19 January – 1 March 2014

Can work be beautiful? Is it allowed to be beautiful? Does this even count as work? We see a man pulling a colourful parasol with a rope. Three middle-aged men are bouncing on a settee. A woman is using a pen to draw grid patterns on sliced toast. All three are pursuing their activities with concentration and diligence. They are unsmiling, as what they are doing is evidently no game. But what is this all about?

In his latest series The Beauty of Serious Work, Andreas Meichsner presents freeze frames from a test laboratory whilst displaying an eye for the extraordinary within the ordinary, for the bizarre of his production. At a location where people apply themselves – tenaciously, earnestly and with great imagination – to making our lives safer and simpler. The results are profound picture puzzles from the world of the objects that surround us.
