Jazz Portraits

Photographs by Jan Henn

"Photography is jazz for the eye."
William Claxton

No snapshots just before the concert or during the first set. No candid pictures of unguarded moments. Instead, Jan Henn arranges a studio: neutral background, suitable lighting, and the camera. No easy feat at most concerts and festivals, but hardly anyone refused his request to pause for a moment and look into the camera. Over the years there emerged a gallery of jazz masters, deliberately concentrated upon their faces.

Black and white portraits, without effects, without props. No colors to distract from the message of the photographs, of the faces, and of the histories written on them, or hidden within.

bildkultur presents this collection as an exhibition of 50 portraits.

50 Fine-Art prints on Baryt-Paper,
