Matthias Bumiller has collated hundreds of wedding photographs from his home town of Jungingen.
Throughout the decades the bridal couple stand next to one another in a stern posture – she on his right arm – facing the camera with a studied composure. Gradually the black gown of the bride yields to the white one. A shy smile appears on the faces and over time evolves into open laughter among the bride and groom. The habitus of the newlyweds, the witnesses and the wedding guests, who are pictured in some of the photographs, also changes gradually. As do their poses and the staging of the picture that is meant to authenticate the best day of their lives.
Thus Matthias Bumiller’s collection is simultaneously a visual delight and a significant source for analysis and interpretation of societal change – far beyond this town.
