PETER SCHANZ
MITTENDURCHSLAND

19 September – 31 October 2021

In the deep forest, where Bavaria, Saxony and Czechia meet, a wanderer embarks on a path that 30 years ago was visible from as far as outer space: the old border that divided the two Germanys, essentially splitting the whole of Europe into East and West.

This turns into a long-distance meditation. Over nearly three months, Peter Schanz walks almost 1500 km across mountains and valleys all the way to the sea. The path he takes is the convoy road which the East German border troops used for their patrols: concrete slabs, laid out flat, each three metres long and one metre wide. He takes pictures of what lies in front of him on the way: a concrete slab with holes in the great outdoors. Eight holes per blink of an eye. His trek leads through German landscapes that today form part of the “European Green Belt“, which stretches from the Arctic Sea in the north of Norway to the Black Sea at the border to Turkey. And there is a lot to learn and reflect on during this walking tour along the meandering juncture of the old political systems: about the force of undisturbed nature, about the German unification as well as the persistent effort to unite Europe peacefully and for the long term.
