Portraits from the Keith Medley Archive
22 November 2015 – 16 January 2016
“There is something profoundly simple and beautiful about the human face. It was therefore an integral and important subject for photography from the outset. (…)
Keith Medley‘s portraits, drawn from glass plate negatives were all made between 1965 and 1968. (…) Exposing half of the glass plate at a time, Medley could get two portraits from each negative. By selecting and printing a number of these plates ‘full frame’ sitters can now be seen shifting and adapting their expressions and poses to camera over time.
In giving us two moments Double Take gives us extended portraits, a doubling of poses that invites us to compare and slows our engagement down. (…)
Looking closely, we can learn something about who Keith Medley‘s subjects were or who they hoped to be and learn something too of the photographer (...).”
