There are literality thousands of sports clubs recorded in
the German statistics - indispensable places of the local community - from
Kolbermoor in upper Bavaria to Emmerich on the lower Rhine.
As different
as the sports association - the ball game club - the gymnastics club - may
be, their architecture and design exhibit common features which are to
be found wherever you go.
The photographer Volker Schrank presents the sports clubs where the heroes
of his youth started to play, the football champions of 1974, including
the clubs of Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner, Rainer Bonhof,
Uli Hoeneß, Bernd Hölzenbein, Jürgen Grabowski, Gerd Müller, Günter Netzer,
Wolfgang Overath und Berti Vogts.
The chosen perspective is demonstratively matter of fact, the rooms and
the playing fields deserted. The direct juxtaposition of Interior and Exterior
draws attention to the aesthetic ambivalence. However, the reduction of
the motifs to a setting acts as a catalyser for the emotions of the observer
who feels complied to continue the series from his own memories and experiences.
bildkultur presents the series Heldenplätze as an exhibition:
