Buttons of grandmother’s wedding gown, portraits of stern looking ancestors in the stairway that is daily crossed, a dented toolbox, a scratched bread bowl, father’s golden signet ring: all these objects are constantly present in daily life but often only marginally noticed or merely revealed during the attempt to settle an estate. These are objects whose meaning lies less in their material value than in their testament to the family matters that rest hidden within them.
In their work, Caitlin Rueter and Eva Schmeckenbecher focus their view on the interaction between object and context by following the traces of those things that combine family tradition and personal history.
