Photographs by Sophia Kalkau
24 January – 28 March 2010
As a sculptor and photographer Sophia Kalkau employs all elements from the two art forms. In her photographs, she transforms herself into sculptures, dressing in white or red and posing on narrow wooden boards or tables. As a caryatid, she herself appears as a column, giving the austere form an ironic touch through a lampshade or funnel over her head. Or she renounces all attributes, becoming all body and hair.
The portrait series by Sophia Kalkau are self portraits. Their topic is not the image but inner states, an extreme subjectivity, which reveals itself to the viewer and irritates him. You can constantly sense the tension between the poetic clarity of her visual expression and the underlying existential statements as well as her personal examination on life and survival.
The works by Sophia Kalkau illustrate clear lines and forms, her pictures are calm and mysterious. At the same time they seem as if in motion, sometimes playful and they appear to be in process like a performance.
