17 April – 22 May 2016
Who am I supposed to be? Who do I want to be? – Two questions that concern adolescents in particular. The American photographer Jona Frank says she is fascinated by the way people grow up and by the various stages in which this process unfolds. In her projects she therefore tends to portray young people on the cusp of adulthood, who are trying out new roles, on the path leading from exploring to discovering their life scripts.
The exhibition Trying-Out combines, for the first time, works from three different projects. In High School, Jona Frank sets out to record the social dynamic of the American public high school. The images in the series Right show portraits of young people, who attend an ultra-conservative Christian college striving to raise the republican elite of tomorrow. The third series – The Modern Kids – led Jona Frank to visit a boxing club in England, taking pictures of, as she says, “the kindest, sweetest, funniest boys I have ever met. And the toughest.“
