SEAWEED GARDEN
Ascophyllum nodosum, laminaria digitata
Knotted wrack and Tangle seaweed: Rebecca Marr chose these and other ocean plants she collected on the coasts of Orkney – mostly unfamiliar to land dwellers – as subjects of the series Seaweed Garden. She presents photograms as a contemporary examination of this traditional photographic technique and shows reverence to the British botanist and photographer Anna Atkins (1799 – 1871).
CLOUDLANDS
Rebecca Marr with poet Valerie Gillies
Cirrus spisatus, cumulonimbus
Clouds over the Orkney Islands: wisplike strands, puffy or also ominous.
Rebecca Marr directs her camera skyward and documents the cloud formations with patience and scientific meticulousness. The series Cloudlands is a respectful homage to the British meteorologist Luke Howard (1772 – 1864), who gave the clouds their names, as well as a new interpretation of the subject matter through the hand painted poems added to the photographs by Valerie Gillies.
Both projects are an attempt to understand nature as it is and also a search for the metaphysical dimension beneath its manifold manifestations.
