BERNADETTE WOLBRING
AMOR VACUI

26 May – 1 July 2011

A Love of Emptiness, as one could translate the Latin title, characterizes the works by Bernadette Wolbring. Exhibited are serene, contemplative photographs, disclosing views into rooms that the viewer cannot comprehend in size. It is not a coincidence that details of the interiors seem vaguely familiar – diamond-shaped floor tiles, for example, or the sharp contours of window casings. The works on view are based on reproductions of famous paintings by Jan Vermeer, Fra Angelico, Vilhelm Hammershøi and Gerhard Richter.

Bernadette Wolbring has erased all traces of humans or objects and concentrates on the light-induced atmospheres. The viewer sees fine nuances of what seems to be the same: soft light falling in, brushing along the walls until it subtly disappears in the dark. Emptiness and absence remain. In her elaborate production process, Bernadette Wolbring interrelates contemporary photographic methods with camera obscura projections, such as the ones used by Vermeer in the 17th century.
