HYSTERICAL SELFIES I PACIFIERS I RELICS
What are the things one really needs? Dawn Woolley explores the complex relationship between humans and the objects with which we surround ourselves. One picture shows a small round table made of pink marble: a black ladies’ stocking is twisted around a cocktail glass in which a liquid glistens darkly, with its counterpart draped over a mirror that reflects tubes and tubs of cosmetics. In another picture Dawn Woolley subtly arranges the paraphernalia of male muscle-flexing: from energy drink to weightlifting dumbbells. The works from her series ‘Hysterical Selfies’ return to still-life painting in the tradition of the old masters. Yet Dawn Woolley doesn’t conjure the magic of objects but criticises the power that these exert over those who identify with them.
In her series ‘Pacifiers’ she investigates the clichés affecting women, who throughout their lives are subjected to the ideals of beauty and perfection as dictated by market and fashion trends.
The ‘Relics’ are from a distance reminiscent of devotional objects. But this impression is misleading.
The ‘Relics’ are no collection of miraculous objects. Crafted from old packaging materials and non-degradable waste, they serve, in fact, as symbols of a reckless consumption that ignores its own devastating impact.
